Designing for Plants

Students at Hillcross Primary School participated in workshops where they designed and built greenhouses. What was made this project different was that the students had to approach packets of seeds as their Clients. The students were encouraged to consider the environmental needs of each pack packet of seeds for optimal growth: Humidity, levels of daylight and sunlight, temperature, precipitation and soil conditions.  this project encouraged students to think differently by imagining life at a different scale and a different environment, then designing the supporting architecture by applying art, structure and environmental science. Guided by professional architects, and with the RIBA's School Outreach Programme, the workshops involved 2D drawings, 3D mock-ups, and full-scale construction using sustainable materials. This hands-on experience not only developed their technical skills but also fostered a deeper understanding of ecological stewardship and creativity.
